Using Binaural Beats - Do They Really Work?

Binaural beats though not new are fairly uncommon to most people. It can be difficult to understand how listening to a recording of these special beats can do much of anything at all. To understand how they work first it is important to know exactly what they are.
What are Binaural Beats?
Believe it or now, binaural beats have been researched for well over 150 years. Basically different frequencies will produce different effects to our consciousness. Our brains actually go through many different frequency cycles within a day. Knowing that, it has been discovered that our part of our frequencies can be altered with sound waves. This is not something to be worried about. We alter our consciousness daily with sounds... think of the effect that music has on us. However many of the brains most powerful frequencies are under 20 Hz. Our ears do not respond to frequencies under 20 Hz. That is where the binaural beats come in.
How do Binaural Beats Work?
So what happens when you listen to mp3 recordings of binaural beats? First of all they work by broadcasting two separate frequencies into each ear. So for example if you wanted to tune your brain to 6 Hz then you would play 200 Hz in your right ear and 205 Hz in your left ear. Your brain will automatically compensate for the difference between the two separate frequencies and produce a third tone that will be 5 Hz. It is actually that simple. Your brain frequency would then be lowered and tuned into the 5 Hz operating stage.
How do We Experience Different States of Consciousness>
It is one thing to understand how our brain will perceive different frequencies but how do these frequencies produce different states of consciousness? Once you have tried binaural beats you will realize that many of the recordings sound very much alike and this can seem vaguely confusing. What is important to understand is that no one recording is the same. The differences can be subtle but they are each tuned for different frequencies. Each different frequency will produce a different state of consciousness. So although some may sound alike they are actually producing very different results. Studies have shown that exact combinations of frequencies will cause different brain reactions. These studies have been documented over and over again.
