How to Admit Mistakes to Your Boss

by Tal Fighel

How would you like to admit your mistakes to your boss and get away with them?

Reverse psychology is a great thing and it works really well. In fact, it's so simple, this tactic doesn't need much explanation at all. Rather, I can go into details for you in a few short sentences.

The normal course of events between a boss and his employee usually goes something like this. This is a situation where the employee made a mistake and is telling his boss that he hadn't done anything wrong.

Boss Says: You really screwed that up big time!

Employee Says: I did not. It wasn't really my fault!

Boss Replies: Then whose fault was it then?

Employee Replies: The specs were all wrong!

And it continues on and on until eventually, the employee starts blaming other employees who work close to him.

If you want to admit mistakes and win at the same time, try this instead.

Boss: You really screwed that up big time!

Employee: You're right sir. I did. It was my fault and I promise I'll do better next time. It will for sure not happen again.

After that comment that you just said to your boss, what you want to do next is to present a list of ideas to him or her of how to keep away from making those mistakes again.

Your boss will be standing there dumbfounded. He won't know what to say to you in response. I am pretty sure that he will be surprised for the better and this will help you down the road.

Why? Because he will have been expecting you to make a few good and solid excuses. Now, his predetermined speech that he had in his head went out the window because the conversation didn't go as he planned.

This is a great way to disarm your boss and help your situation become a positive one rather then a total disaster.
