The Buck brand of knives goes back a long time. It seems like every family has a Buck knife that has passed from generation to generation out on the trails, out on the range, or out on the hunt. The Buck 119 Special continues that long tradition, exemplifying many of the design qualities that helped to establish and maintain that tradition. It is a simple but versatile design that functions well in a wide range of applications. Everyone knows this knife, but it is time to take another look at everything this knife is and does.
A perennial best seller for Buck, the 119 Special features a classic design and look that looks very simple but that is capable of performing a diverse range of functions. The knife is ten inches long with a six inch 420HC stainless steel clip point style blade. The handle is phenolic, a synthetic plastic material that can take whatever abuse you can throw at it. The knife's look is finished off with a polished aluminum finger guard and butt.
Precision cutting ability is one of the major attributes of the 119 Special. Cutting through bone or wood to make kindling is no problem for the 119 Special, and the clip point style blade allows for precision cutting in tight places such as might be encountered while dressing out or skinning an animal.
The handle feels heavy but it helps to center the knife in your hand and overall the knife handles very well. Phenolic is a very hard and very durable synthetic resin that is not slippery to handle. It is very tough, if not impossible, to break this handle.
Accompanying the 119 Special is high quality leather sheath that features a button down latch to keep the knife in place and a very smart plastic insert inside the sheath that helps to prevent the knife from cutting the sheath after repeated use. The sheath also features a belt loop that while not perfectly designed (it doesn't unlatch so that to remove it you have to remove your belt) gets the job done without a problem.
The 119 Special is quite light weighing in at about ten and one half ounces including the sheath and this fact combined with its versatility and durability makes the 119 Special a good choice for a survival knife. You could use it to cut bark from trees, prepare food, cut kenneling, cut branches to build a make shift shelter, and skin game among other things.
